FAMILY TRADITION – that the daughter’s wears their mother’s wedding dress?

My oldest has been giving me so much grief – I’m so stressed! She has to wear this dress. She can’t break the tradition!! Come on now – I’m paying for the wedding that’s the least she can do!!!!!!!!!!!

I personally think that that dress is absolutely beautiful – but it is definitely old fashioned and not to everyone’s taste. I would also look awful in it – really only fits a certain body type so even though I love it I wouldn’t want to wear it. Maybe you can work out a compromise – I wouldn’t want to chop such a gorgeous antique dress up to alter it but maybe you could do a special professional photo session if you want a picture of all three of you in the same dress. But let her pick her own dress for the wedding – come on – don’t you remember being the bride? If your mom tried to make all your decisions for you didn’t you just hate it? Or if she let you choose wasn’t it so fun to make all those decisions about your big day? Why would you deny your daughter that? Sure it would be a lovely tradition to start but not at the expense of your daughter’s wishes (and I wouldn’t call it a tradition unless it had also been your grandmother’s dress – one repeat doesn’t make a “tradition”). You called her your oldest – if you have other daughters maybe one of them has different tastes and would be thrilled to wear it. Maybe there is something else – a veil or a piece of jewelry she could wear to have something you both wore even if it wasn’t THE dress. Maybe she’d be willing to have it on a dress stand as a decoration. Try to put yourself in her shoes here. I’m sure you are disappointed that she doesn’t want to wear a dress that is very special to you and start the tradition you were hoping for – and it’s ok to be disappointed. And as a new mother myself I’m sure you’ve actually been dreaming of her wearing this dress since before she even knew what a wedding was (I’d love it if my little girl wore mine one day). But being a mom is all about making sacrifices in what you want for the sake of your kids. Remember that this is her big day – you already had yours – don’t ruin such a special time by bullying her into wearing something she will resent you for the whole day and every time she looks at her wedding photos. Thats not a good way to start this new stage of your relationship as 2 adults. Best of luck.
