First, you need to know exactly where the best places to take great photographs are:

· Rim Trail is perfect for the novice photographer. It follows along the canyon’s rim and offers several excellent vantage points. One of the best features is that it follows the road, so if you become too tired you can easily hike to the closest shuttle bus waiting area.

· Mather Point is another one of the more popular destinations for great pictures. It is located on the canyon’s South Rim very close to the entrance to the park. Get there early, however, because the parking lot fills up fast!

· Yavapia Point is also a very popular spot because of its excellent panoramic view.

· Shoshone Point, at the South rim, may not be marked adequately enough, but it has a rare characteristic, solitude. Because the area is not well-known, there are not too many people around.

· Desert View is located roughly twenty-five miles from the Eastern edge of the canyon. Located here is a Susan Coulter building called the Watchtower; this is worth photographing too. This spot is also a great place to capture magnificent sunsets.

Second, you will want to make sure you have the proper equipment you need to get a great shot. You will want these accouterments to optimize your images and get spectacular results.

· Of course you will need an excellent camera, preferably an SLR of some kind

· It is vital that you have a great tripod that is lightweight for your hikes

· Wide angle lenses for panoramic shots

· Telephoto zoom lenses for close ups and wildlife shots

· Polarizing & graduated neutral density filters for the front of your lenses. These make the blue sky bluer and will help your camera capture the brilliant colors of the canyon.

Third, you need to know when the best time of day is to capture the pictures you desire.

· Sunset and sunrise are two of the best times to get great pictures at the Grand Canyon. You will get the super saturated Arizona sky at either time but at sunrise you will have the least “competition”.

· The middle of the day can also be great. At these times you will see active wildlife and, of course, have the most natural lighting available.

Fourth, there are different times of year you will want to visit to get a certain kind of pictures.

· From the beginning of February to the end of March is a good time simply because the canyon is not as crowded.

· The Grand Canyon is busiest in the summer months from June to August, but this is also a great time to get shots of the fauna it holds.

· If visiting in the winter you can get some great pictures, but just be careful not to get stuck in a storm.

With these four tips in mind you will have no problems taking the photos you want when you take your next vacation at the Grand Canyon. Just remember to bring plenty of water and your hiking shoes!
