Brits Break the Speedo Limit

A few years ago, the mere thought of a Speedo brief might have sent the average Brit running for cover. But the latest British retail statistics show that Speedo sales are up in the UK – and that young Brits, in particular, are choosing to break the Speedo limit.

But perhaps “burst” through the Speedo limit is a better phrase. After all, the last six months alone have seen a 400 per cent increase in searches for the word “Speedo”, compared to the same time last year. Not long after, sales of Speedos increased by 21 per cent on last year at John Lewis, and currently make up 35 per cent of men’s swimwear sales at Selfridges (they only made up 10 per cent of sales two years ago).

So what’s responsible for this sudden interest in form-fitting swimwear? Some would argue that the trend is driven by recent promotional spreads in big name fashion magazines – such as Vanity Fair – in which young and fit footballers are featured flaunting tiny Speedos. Others might see a correlation between the increase in sales, and a greater number of young, body-conscious men going to the gym and looking after themselves. Retail buyers have noted a parallel between underwear styles and swimwear styles, with consumers tending to “downsize” in underwear designs (from boxer shorts to trunks, and from trunks to briefs), just like in swimwear designs. And it’s also no coincidence that the sudden surge in sales appeared just prior to summer.

However, the comeback of the Speedo certainly doesn’t mean that the design will be worn by every man at the beach or poolside (nor does it mean it should be). Speedos aren’t for everyone, whether due to a soft physique or a timid tendency. As always, they are still tight and they cut a rather unforgiving line just beneath the stomach – which means they’ll show off a paunch in two seconds flat. So if you have a bit of a belly, opt for a pair of men’s swimshorts – which are guaranteed to flatter you more than a Speedo). The good news is, there are currently countless retail manufacturers who either specialise in men’s swimwear designs, or carry various styles them under their brand. So if you’re not ready – or willing – to take the Speedo plunge, opt instead for a floral, vintage or other eye-catching print in swim shorts for a covered-up (and more confident) beach or pool experience.
