Vintage Skinny Ties

There are many occasions when you will need to wear a tie, whether it is for wok at the office, an interview, wedding or special occasion or an evening out.

The tie was first worn by Croatian mercenaries in the 17th Century, when they wore knotted neckties during the Thirty Year War. The necktie soon became a fashionable clothing accessory and has been with us ever since.

Ties have always been worn by businessmen, and it has been suggested that a tie is the most important clothing accessory required to make a good impression, as it is one of the first things that is noticed when meeting someone.

To ensure you are wearing the right tie for the any occasion, there are three principles to remember. The first rule of tie etiquette is the design and colour, most importantly if you choose a patterned shirt opt for a plain, solid colour tie and a patterned tie should only be worn with a plain shirt. Tie colour is a little more flexible, either contrast the colour of your shirt or coordinate the colour, for example a light blue shirt could be worn with a slightly darker blue tie.

Tie width has changed greatly over the years, from the extra wide ties of the 1970′s to the ultra skinny ties of the 1980′s, be aware of what’s fashionable now, if you haven’t worn a tie for a while, it is advisable to check local retailers, rather than rely on your old favourite, which may be a decade out of date. In the business environment a tie should be neither too wide or too thin, although a slightly thinner tie has now become more accepted.

Tie width can also be gauged by lapel width, assuming you will be wearing a jacket. Wider lapels allow for a wider tie, while body shape can also be a factor. A broader shoulder width can accommodate a wider tie, while a taller, thinner body type will generally suit a thinner width.

Consideration should also be given to your tie knot, as the type of knot you use will determine its width. Several types of knot exist, including the four in hand, which is usually the easiest to learn. Others include the Windsor and half Windsor, which will vary the width of the knot. There are many other variations and it is worth while investing some time in achieving your desired look.
