Antique radio

An antique radio is a radio receiving set that is collectible because of its age and uniqueness. Although collectors may differ on the cutoff dates, most would use 50 years old, or the pre-World War II Era, for vacuum tube sets and the first five years of transistor sets.

When this was launched this site in 1995, there was only one other antique radio website in the world. We did not have time to count them now, but we suspect there are hundreds. If we know about a choice radio website that should be added to this list.

For those who are relatively new to the hobby of collecting and restoring antique radios, the frustration stemming from the lack of material devoted to the beginner in this field is all too often the cause of those with high initial enthusiasm to give up prematurely.

The first radio receivers used a coherer and sounding board, and were only able to receive Morse code, and thump it out on the board. This type of transmission is called Continuous wave or wireless telegraphy. When wireless telephony became possible, speech radio greatly improved the usability of radio communication.

The antique radio page is the best place to start if we want to learn about antique radios. This award-winning site features a huge image gallery with hundreds of antique radios tube i.e. transistor, and crystal sets, useful articles, reviews of out-of-print radio reference books, and the amazing Arp directory where we can search and find antique radios on the web.

From 1924 to 1932 Emerson Radio and Phonograph Corporation distributed radio receivers bearing the name Emerson through many diverse channels, including department and sporting goods stores.

Radio-gatherers are proud of their old Zenith radio and those who can only envy. The first Zenith radios were built in 1923 shortly after its formation. He continued to produce what might be called the jewel of a radio series. All the different types of old Zenith Radio have a charm of its own. And floor timber frame model or a table top, or a tombstone.

Most valve sets needed many seconds for the valves to heat up; though there were exceptions Warm-up times changed as valves went through several generations of design. Vacuum tube radios and early transistor radios were hand assembled. Today radios are designed with the assistance of computers and manufactured with much greater use of machinery.

Today’s radios are usually uneconomic to repair because mass production and technological improvements in numerous areas have made them so cheap to buy, while the cost of human labor and workshop overheads have not fallen in real terms.
