how do I go about getting an appraisal for a vintage, hand stitched quilt top?

Yes, UK is absolutely right. The AQS is the main body certifying quilt appraisers in the U.S. I’ve put a link to their list of certified appraisers below. BTW, the last time I had an appraisal done, it cost $35. Also, we’re in ‘quilt show’ season now – if you have any coming up in your area, check with the sponsoring group, because some offer appraisal services (for a fee) at the show, if that’s more convenient.
