Historic Route 66 was commissioned in 1926 and only eight hundred miles of Route 66 were paved at that time. Over the years Route 66 has become a very popular nostalgic topic and tourist attraction. It is 2,448 miles long and it has many names, such as the Old Mother Road, Main Street of America and Will Rogers Highway. Although the historic Route 66 has not been included on “official” maps since 1984, almost eighty four percent of it can still be traveled today. It spans America passing through eight states including; California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois.
Each year Route 66 states plan several individual special events and festivities. This year’s itinerary includes a Miss Route 66 Pageant, dances, car shows, picnics, festivals and much more. If you have traveled much, you have probably seen some of Route 66 first hand. There are many landmarks and sites to visit along the way. Each Route 66 state has its own unique sites, contributions and attractions that add to the lore of the Mother Road.
Even though several interstates have virtually replaced the old highway, many travelers seek it out and drive this vintage road for pleasure, historical value and some just to reminisce. Along the way, you will encounter the remnants of ghost towns killed by the super highways that have replaced Route 66. Some of these are a ghost town lover’s dream, such as Glenrio, Texas; Cuervo, New Mexico; and a long stretch of ghost towns as you enter California’s Mojave Desert.
One of the most popular places to visit is located in Arcadia, Oklahoma where you can stop and see the big round red barn. It’s the most photographed landmark along the way. While in Oklahoma, you can also visit the big blue whale located in Catoosa.
Another popular stop is the KiMo Theater in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It’s believed to be haunted by the ghost of a six year old boy who was killed there in an accident in 1951 when a boiler exploded. Albuquerque is also the place to be if you want to stand on the corner of Route 66 & Route 66.
Arizona holds the longest stretch of the original Route 66 still in use today. You can also visit the Grand Canyon and see the historic bridge crossing the Colorado River while you are there.
If you love nostalgic memorabilia, you have probably included a few Route 66 t-shirts, signs, post cards or other Route 66 gift items in your collection. After all, America’s Main Street has been featured in several movies, it was the title of a TV series in the 1960′s and has its own song, Get Your Kicks on Route 66 originally written by Bobby Troup in 1946.
Whether you remember Route 66 from your childhood or want to take your children on an educational road trip, Route 66′s existing sections provide a handy refuge for those wanting to explore America’s past.
