What is the best performance microphone for beginners? cheap?

I am in high school and my friends and I have started a band (haha i know typical) :]

Shure SM57 for instruments, Shure SM58 for vocals. You can use both for either. SM57 is a little flatter in terms of frequency response, so it doesn’t warm the vocals up as much, but it’s great for instruments, especially guitars, keys, etc. The SM58 is warmer in the vocal range, but can also be used to record instruments that are close to that frequency range – violins, accordians, harmonicas, etc.

Go with what your ears tell you.

Can’t help you with quality of the stands, etc. I would ask your local music store for that. Not Guitar Center, a real music store.

The Samson CO1 is a very decent sounding, inexpensive condenser mic. If you end up doing recording, this is one way to get started. They don’t work well for the stage, since they’re so sensitive, but they’re great for getting fine details that a dynamic mic would miss. Use them together for the best of both worlds.

All of these mics are around 100$. I don’t think I’ve seen the CO1 for more than 130$. You don’t need phantom power for the Shure mics, but you do for the Samson.
