Can I used damaged art to make something new?
Can I use a damaged painting to make something new? Like for instance using a piece of a damaged painting for the background of a clock? Or using a piece of a damaged painting to make a resin pendant for jewelry? Would this be Intellectual Property infringement?
I have see other make items from vintage maps, dictionary, and posters. I was planning on using damaged art from thrift stores to make some things as way to make more green items. If this would illegal are there any suggestions as to what if any vintage art I can use.
Yes, but with permission only. Imagine if the dusty old painting you found in Grandma’s attic that you sliced into pieces turned out to be a Van Gogh or a sentimental family heirloom?
Even tread lightly with art parody of powerful brands, vintage or otherwise! And whatever you do, don’t ever mess with the Apple logo in any way, shape or form or suffer the wrath of Steve Jobs which could end your art career forever! (Even Microsoft has a sense of humor when its trademark finds its way into a clever parody!)
Many of the master artists defining the Pop Art Movement, such as Warhol, Rauschenberg and Lichtenstein often rummaged through municipal, business and household trash for objects of interest for their work, from soup labels and lithography plates, to rusty street signs and other throwaway materials.
With the emergence of the Pop Art Movement, it’s been ‘anything goes’ for art ever since.
