In knitting, is there a correlation between yarn weight and needle size?
I want to substitute yarns for vintage patterns and some of the yarns they use are discontinued so I need a good guide.
Mostly the pattern will give an amount of stitches and rows per 4 inch/10 cm. All yarn in the shops have that same info.
Match, but still make your own swatch.
I found the name, it is called gauge.
So go for yarn with the same gauge as the pattern asks for.
It does help if it is the same kind of yarn, like a fluffy wool or a tightly twisted cotton, but if the gauge is the same you will make a garment in the same size.
