You can’t judge a book by its cover, but you can determine the worth of a restaurant by its cover. Menu covers, though playing second fiddle to the menu itself, speak volumes about a restaurant’s image. These covers tell the customers that the dishes and beverages listed on the menu have been planned carefully and are worth their time. Also, the colors, material, and the design used for the covers reflect how well a restaurant is doing financially.

Menu covers are made of different materials such as plastic, canvas, fabric, leather, vinyl, card stock, or cork. Most of them come in 9-by-12-inch format, though sizes from 5.5 by 8.5 inches to 10 by 13 inches may also work. The number of meals on the list and ease of use dictate the ideal size of a restaurant menu cover.

The design or theme of a menu cover depends on the type of restaurant and its customer profile. If you own a family restaurant, you can put a brief copy of your business’ history or your food philosophy. Casual family dining establishments can use laminated covers with photos of pancakes, burgers, desserts, pizza or any food that’s appealing to children. If your restaurant is situated in an old or historic building, you can include vintage photos of the building on it.

Colors also play an essential role in a menu cover. The colors to use for them must be consistent with the theme of a restaurant. Also, the best colors for any cover should evoke positive feelings and images. If most customers of a restaurant are families with young children, it can have multiple bright colors. The more colors used, the higher the cost of printing one, as prices are determined per color.

The menu cover should not only be appealing to the customers, but functional as well. A good cover is made of durable materials to protect the pages inside the menu. The right material also depends on the type of restaurant. For example, the ideal cover for a posh restaurant is made of expensive and elegant leather. Plastic menu covers may look too cheap for a high-class restaurant but just right for a mid-price eatery.

If you manage a restaurant, it’s best that you carefully plan how your menu cover should look. It’s a small yet important step in driving more customers into your restaurant.

There is a website by the name of Menu Cover Guide that deals specifically in all aspects of designing and choosing menu covers. It is owned and operated by P. Walters who, besides being a successful restaurant owner, is an expert on menu covers.
