Vintage barber chairs are very expensively priced collector’s items. There aren’t too many of them still available at they have been rapidly snatched up by professional buyers and various museums. many old style barber shops have changed over to more traditional chairs so it is very hard to find a old style barber shop that still features them in the shop.
my local barber has three vintage barber chairs in his old style barber shop, but he doesn’t use that part of the shop to cut hair. Instead he has installed two other chairs where he does his work. In the wall display case above the vintage barber chairs are vintage clippers. He once told me that the value of those vintage barber chairs and the clippers were worth more than his barber shop and all the money he had made in it over the past 40 years.
The original barber chair was created by Earnest Koken in 1906. This was a hydraulic chair that allowed the barber to adjust the height of the person in the chair to meet his needs. This helped ensure the very best hair cut even for the very young children who came to the barber. This barber chair also featured a spinning feature so the barber could turn the customer as needed, a footrest, and a reclining back.
