Christmas Party Dresses – Sequins in Sequence

Nothing says ‘special occasion’ more than sparkling sequins on the perfect dress. Whether in a divine sequence or as a soft sprinkle, sequins add sensational sparkle and festive charm to Christmas party dresses. For the coming Yuletide season, sequins will be ‘the’ trendy detail for exquisite dresses.

Of course, sequins have always had a place in Christmas fashions. Yet now the appeal of sequins is more widespread and extends to all age groups and every type of clothing. Sequins suit ladies’ fashions or little girls’ dresses. They look fabulous on full length gowns or tea length skirts.

Although sequins used to be reserved for fancy dress and runway models, they are now showing up in everyday fashions. It is common in contemporary styles to see a sprinkle of sequins on a sleeveless shirt or casual coat. Often today’s fashions can have sequins in bold colors or a rainbow of shades. Sequins can show up on any fabric from organza to taffeta to denim. They sparkle on cute boleros and adorable accessories.

Sequined dresses are suitable for girls’ Christmas party dresses. Sequins do not have to overpower a dress. Their use can be subtle and tasteful and perfect for a girls’ holiday dress.

Mostly, sequins used to be seen in silver or gold but now multi-colored sequins have entered the mix. Yet silver and gold sequins continue to spread Christmas cheer. Silver charmeuse dresses or silver pure silk gowns provide Yuletide sparkle – even without sequins.

Silver and black is an unbeatable combination for holiday dresses. A black stretch velvet bodice with a sparkle silver taffeta short skirt offers winning style and dramatic contrast. Gold and navy go well together for a Christmas outfit.

Generally, sequins add an element of contrast to a dress. Multi-colored sequins can add colorful contrast. As well, sequins can provide balance to a gown. Delicate embroidery and elaborate sequence detail can create unbeatable style.

The History of Sequins

. The oldest sequin is believed to have been found at King Tutankhamen’s burial site. Craftsmen created the sequins by rolling gold super thin, cutting out discs, glazing them to prevent scratches, and attaching them to the boy king’s clothes.

. Shisha mirror work has a lengthy history in India and with nomadic tribes.

. Gold coins have been used as a form of sequins. The travelling Romany gypsies decorated their clothes with coinage.

. Fine layers of mother-of-pearl have been used to make sequins. Kings and queens have decorated their clothes with natural mother-of-pearl shell buttons.

. Sequins were used in embroideries of the 16th century. Usually, silver metal discs were made from flattening a ring of silver wire. The flat silver disc was sewn on with a bead to hold it in place.

. When gelatin was discovered and used to create sequins, the sequins were unstable, could never be washed, or put near heat, and they gave off an odor. Sequins created from gelatin did not have the desired effect.

. In the 1920s, sequins made from thinly rolled silver sheets gave weight and ‘hang’ to flapper dresses. This type of sequins is no longer in use. The silver caused discoloration on dresses from the sequin cut edges.

. Today’s sequins are cut from a sandwich of colored foil. Vintage sequins are still available from online specialty stores.
