Your opinion – OK or not for vintage shops to sell old fur?

I would never ever wear fur anyway, but I do buy other vintage clothes, and I can’t make up my mind whether it’s OK for vintage stores to sell fur coats and hats etc. There is definately demand. The furs were more than likely made with cruelty but this is re use, so it’s possibly better to maximise the use of them to lessen the waste of the cruel way they were made, than to discard them. I don’t know how I feel about this. Any insights or opinions to help me decide?

Well, whether we like it or not, animal fur was a common trimming in vintage coats and some dressware. There are many vintage items that have animal fur in their designs.
I know it seems perhaps that if you were to purchase these vintage items that you would be in some way condoning animal cruelty. But you are not condoning it, you are purchasing an authentic piece of american fashion from our fashion history.

You can purchase this item that contains animal fur for re-sale, you can also “up-cycle” the piece by removing the fur and trimming it with another fabric. But remember it would lose it’s valuable history.

It is okay for vintage shops to sell these items, just as it is okay for you to buy them.

There are many vintage clothng collectors that do not wear the vintage items they purchase, but hold them for their value and history. Some collect vintage shoes and pocketbooks for this same reason, just as they do jewelry.

Whatever decision you make, just remember that vintage items are just that, old pieces of our history. We may disagree with many things from our past, but if you are interested in true vintage items, you will find that it is not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing, but of value and authenticity.
