Does it damage a ring when a mold is cast of it?!?

My friend took my vintage platinum diamond ring to her jeweler friend to have a diamond replaced for me. When the ring was fixed, she gave it back to me and told me that she asked her jeweler to make a ring for her that’s similar to mine. A month later, she showed me her new ring and it was an exact replica of mine. She then divulged to me that she had a mold cast of my ring. Do you think what she and her jeweler did was ethical? And more importantly, what is the PROCESS of CASTING A MOLD, and can any DAMAGE be done to the ring?

It was unethical of her AND the jeweler. I would report him to the BBB at least. Reputation is everything in that business… like trusting your banker or accountant.

I recommend that you also have the ring reappraised by a different jeweler so that you are sure that the stones were not also replaced or the platinum is now a plated fake. You may have gotten a copy back.

Demanding the mold as one poster said, may be possible but he could simply claim it was broken but that shouldn’t really be the concern. The mold may be used to make counterfeits, so reporting him to the appropriate jewelers association for investigation may be the best thing to do.

You need to decide what to do about your friend, but surely let her know you do not appreciate her deceit, and that she betrayed your trust by risking a valued ring. It does almost sound like a set up.

It is always better to take your valuables to a trusted and reputable jeweler yourself, because switching is not as uncommon as it should be.

Making a mold is not damaging when done properly, but the stones are usually removed from the finding (metal ring part)before a plaster or latex mold is made. Stones can be scratched and broken or replaced and lost in the process of removal. Any scratches on a ring metal can be easily buffed out and broken parts soldered.

Have your ring authenticated immediately, and press charges on both if appropriate.
