Boomboxes come in different shapes and sizes, brands and makes. But where can you get a vintage double cassette player that’s just new in the market? The Supersonic SC-2020 CD Boombox is one of the later models of double cassette tape players that have been designed as boomboxes, loud music players that can rock the house down. But what does it have to offer?

Design

It looks similar to most boomboxes – big, bulky, and has two speakers at each side. But it really has more of that vintage look, an old model of cassette tape player, much like the ones we had when we were still in high school and it was the early 90′s. It’s a very manual machine and you have to operate everything by hand and on the device itself. It has no remote, but it does have a CD player deck at the top. It’s pretty plain and simple, and the design is classic.

It’s bulky as like any loud music-making device, but as a boombox it would have been better less large because it would be nice to bring it around like when you’re out of town or having a party at another place. It weighs 12 pounds and it’s 25.75” wide, 10” deep, and 11.25” tall.

You might find operating it confusing at first, as like with most old and old-designed stereo systems which have so many buttons, wheels, and tuners on it. You’d have to read closely on the small text labels of every button and gear that you press or turn, but that’s normal as far as a first-time-used device goes.

Video

It has a very simple LCD display that only shows the track number of the song on the CD being played. There’s nothing much to say about it, and it’s practically useless if you’re not playing a CD on the device.

Audio

The stereo set is composed of an FM tuner, a CD player, and a double cassette player. No new device can be as old as the design of this model. The FM tuner is analogue and it makes use of a telescopic antenna to find coverage. This is one of the things I dislike most about this model because I seriously hate analogue tuning. But I didn’t really expect a high-tech operational system for this especially when I saw that it had a double cassette player. I mean, who uses cassette nowadays?

I think most people use the cassette for recording. And those who have cassette collections also enjoy playing their favorite old songs on this device. It’s pretty good for a cassette player but its sound system may not be as much. For a boombox, it’s not that noisy, and you have to manually equalize the stereo. I think that’s a good point, though, because you can alter the sound equalizer to the most precise level that you find preferable.

Other Features

The radio is dual to tri band, and the volume control is rotary. Its CD deck has an auto stop system, and it also has a built-in microphone that allows you to record directly on the boombox itself. You can listen as loud as you want or privately by using headphones. It has a headphone jack for that purpose. The device operates on AC/DC power, but it has an 8-piece D-battery compartment so you can use back-up power for outdoor use, or if there are power outages and you still want to tune in.

Conclusion

It’s as decent as it is, but not as slick and functional as many other devices. But for its price, it can be a good bargain. I use it for FM and CD playing only, as I do not have cassettes and I stick to one radio station. Nevertheless, I’m quite satisfied with the Supersonic SC-2020 CD Boombox and I wouldn’t mind recommending it to those who’d like to have an additional stereo system in their homes.
