How can I safely remove stains from my grandmother’s vintage aprons?
My grandmother recently gave me some of her old aprons that are probably 50+ years old. I’d like to safely give them a good cleaning, but I’m not sure how to do it without harming the fabric. Any advice would be greatly appreciated- Thanks!
One thing you have to realize is there will be no guaranty that whatever you do will not harm them. 50 year old fabric is 50 year old fabric so any soils, stains, pollution particles etc have had 50 years to do their damage. Washing them could reveal damage that in fact, was ALREADY THERE.
So, if you want to try something, the best thing would be to apply stain removers like Shout or Ace to any visible stains then wash the aprons on a delicate cycle with some detergent. When they are finished and well rinsed, restart the machine and add a cup of “all color bleach” such as Biz, Vanish, Blanco Colors, Chlorox2). Let the powder dissolve really well in the water and then let the machine swish the aprons around for about 5 minutes. Then stop the machine and let the aprons soak at least 8 hours.
All color bleach is safe to use for 8+ hours and will help remove any dingy looks or the last traces of certain stains.
You can also do this in a plastic bucket (the soaking) if your machine is a front loader or if you cannot program a long soak cycle with your washer.
