Patio Gardens of musical nirvana Utah Lake

Laguna: Patio Gardens

There is a park near the city, yes to all children dig the Lagoon now … …. "

Brian Wilson / Mike Love

When you think big time rock concert in the West, sites that appear to the mind of most major field of rock festivals in San Francisco, Los Angeles and other cities along the coast. The same is true for midwestern and eastern states. This is not really unexpected, it's like Willie Sutton said, "because that's where the money is. "What is surprising, however, is that during the 1960's and early 70's, conservative, homespun Utah is a mecca for rock & roll and psychedelic shows big time. As expected, Salt Lake City has had its share of famous bands, mostly playing the Terrace Room, which was built in 1930 as the Coconut Grove (billed as the biggest show in the United States) rainbow Quote renamed in the 1940's, and finally become Terrace Room Dance during the 1950's. Until the construction of the Salt Palace in 1969, the ballroom remained Terrace largest salt lakes in room concert. Students Union "U" also hosted a rock concert once in a while, but be careful especially the college crowd. During the decade 1960, to go downtown to the terrace, especially the Saturday night "Battle of the Bands." But for me it was just the only place to see the big rock and roll show should be a garden patio Laguna.

Strange as it may seem, in the 1960's, the capital of rock & roll in Utah was a small town of Farmington. It is a quiet little village of less than 2500 people will welcome the biggest names in rock & roll is due to two factors. First Instead, the Salt Lake was a tough day on the west coast, so many bands could go and come from a quick glance, and was also right on Highway 80, midway, if the group headed for Chicago. Second, Farmington had Laguna, the amusement park only real states, and a perfect place for a rock concert. And believe me, was nothing more fun than going to the lake for a concert. I had everything I could see the biggest rock acts in the world, eat, take a ride on the roller coaster, and if had the chance, I discovered to date in the house ghost. If you've ever attended a rock concert to create small gardens, which have always been pampered by the rock & roll stage. There was no bleeding from the nose in the Garden. You can measure the distance to the scene in feet, yards, and worst rival the best seat in any stadium or arena. No crush of humanity there, but the crowd was large enough to create an electric atmosphere, while maintaining an intimacy with the group. Tables and chairs more comfortable than the bleachers seats or seats, and you can buy a liter of soda / mixer to complete the paper bag he had. It began the expression Cool.

And they all came, Blue Cheer, The Beau Brummels, Donovan, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Herman's Hermits, Jan and Dean, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Pete Seeger Peter and Gordon, Strawberry Alarm Clock, animals, of the Association, the Beach Boys, The Dave Clark Five, The Doors, The Electric Prunes, The Mamas & The Papas, The Mothers of Invention, The Rolling Stones and dozens of other top acts Psychedelic Rock & Roll played the garden patio in the 70's and early 60's. It was musical nirvana.

The attraction of the Salt Palace has become more able to compete with backyard gardens, and finally, the building became a skating rink, and later in its current use as the Laguna de arcade. The Garden is now a memory, like many of our young people Gone But Not Forgotten.

The first band I saw in the courtyard gardens was the Beach Boys. In total, played 7 times in the Laguna from 1963 to 70. As for the Laguna de fiesta song great for children and most beautiful girls in the western states, "Salt Lake City", appeared in their summer days, and Summer Nights album. And even if you never saw the general as a 45 rpm version only had limited release in 1965 as a promotional item for distribution in Store in Salt Lake City. It is rare to find a good copy of those days.
