Zachary Taylor was victorious in three battles of the war with Mexico in late 1846. After Battle of Monterrey in September, many of its soldiers were assigned to General Winfield Scott proposed an attack against the Mexican coastal city of Veracruz. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered the Mexican army, and knew that Scott had captured the headlines diverted Taylor's best troops. In late January 1847, therefore, was 21,000 soldiers attack north of Taylor's weakened force of about 5,000. U.S. forces placed near the Hacienda de San Juan de Buena Vista, where the road passes between the mountains. The Mexican army, reduced to about 15,000 men by death, disease and desertion, reached the United States' position on 22 February. After that Taylor rejected the invitation to visit Santa Anna, the Mexicans attacked. The fighting was fierce but inconclusive. It ended at dusk. Santa Anna has reopened battle the next morning. Mexican cavalry rode around the position of the United States and its supplier base to the estate. Col Jefferson Davis has trained volunteers in Mississippi and Indiana regiment in a wide range of V.
