An Upcoming Exhibition at Max Müller Bhavan in Pune

Exhibition,Urban Changes an upcoming event in Pune, at the Max Muller Bhavan which is slated on for its opening and preview on March 10th, 2008, between 6:30 p.m. till March 20th comprises selected images from the body of work created by participants during a photography workshop held at Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai last year. The workshop was conducted by the Berlin based international curator and photographer Andrea Kuenzig, whose photographs and stories from events in Europe, the Middle East and Africa have appeared in various well-known newspapers, magazines and books.

The focus of this workshop was to capture and present images of India through the lenses of well-known young photographers from the South Asia region.

The topic “Urban Changes” has a large canvas as such and the approaches of photographic exploration are manifold. In their endeavour to present their perception of “Urban Changes” the photographers got the opportunity to identify their individual forte in this field and develop their own stylistic approach in photography. They primarily focused on the development of urban and rural structures in the era of globalisation, using photography as an art form and also a medium for juxtaposition.

The Artists and their Photography:

Alefiya Akbarally from Sri Lanka portrayed “Urban Fabric” by showing the Dhoti Ghats of India.

Jagath Deerasekara also from Sri Lanka tells us the story of the sugarcane industry and its arrival in the big city.

Baptist Coelho, our guest of honour from Mumbai, shows urban scenes along the Western Railway Line in Mumbai.

Claire Anni from Bangalore photographed the oldest trades of silk dying and weaving in Bangalore as well as the fishing communities and their try to survive in the era of globalisation.

Mahesh Shantaram, also from Bangalore, paints a portrait of a middle class neighbourhood in Bangalore by observing with his camera the relationships between residents and their built environment.

Vivek M. from Bangalore as well chose “Scavenger´s Tale” as his project and shows how the increasing garbage in the cities becomes a new means of livelihood for rag pickers.

Sohail Abdullah from Karachi, who is both a sculptor and photographer, took the wall as his topic and shows various walls in Mumbai.

Baptist Coelho explores and expresses art through many diverse mediums including video, sound and architectural installations, public-art, objects, performance, photography, sculpture wall drawings, collage and site-specific works. His photography has been featured in the Times Journal of Photography and has been considered to be among the “Best Photos of 2001″.
