Should I replace my sons lost pet w/o him knowing?
My 10 year old son got a russian tortoise, Yoshi, for his birthday this August. Almost everyday he took Yoshi outside to feed him fruits and veggies. Last Tuesday he was outside reading and the turtle escaped. We have looked everywhere, knocked on doors, hung posters and notified the local shelters. Tonight and tomorrow it will snow and get below freezing and I don’t think the turtle will make it. My son is a very emotional child and feels very guilty and upset with this loss. He literally has cryed himself to sleep evert night, and will break down several times a day. Having a lost pet could bring on years of pain, as he already says he never wants another. My question, should I replace the turtle and not tell him? It breaks my heart to see him hurt so bad over a few distracted minutes. The turtle was a russian tortoise, very common in pet stores and they look very similar. I could say I found him outside, and he will be much more responsible in the future. What do you think?
NO!!!!! bad Idea. Use the experience to teach your son how to deal with loss or disappointment. ( I know it hurts sooo much to see them sad but its something that everyone has to learn. You also don’t want to jeopardize your sons trust in you. Good luck.
