Posters Black And White Music

Hip Style On A Minimal Budget

Many people are all too content to leave their apartments and homes in their ‘default’ state. That is to say, with boring white walls, and a severe lack of imagination. The funny thing is that most people generally don’t like to live that way. So why do they do it? Why don’t they makeover their homes to suit their own personal style?

You don’t need to go through this anymore. Today’s style is all about incorporating home decor accents that show off your personality. This means you can go wild, and by following just a few basic principles of design, you’ll have a place that you actively enjoy living in, rather than one you just tolerate as a place to sleep in between working.

One important consideration here is that this needn’t be a total room makeover. You can go that far if you want, but you can often achieve pleasing results with just a few props and a touch of paint. Getting rid of white walls is key, and you should go with either a deep cool color if you’re a mellow person, or a vibrant sunny color if you’re an outgoing and active person.

In addition to color, you’re going to want to pay some attention to the aspects of the house that are purely decorative. Anything like posters, incense burners, anything that exists just to look at — ask yourself: do these items really reflect your interests and personality? If not, it’s time to get some new pieces.

Of course you’re going to want to tend on the side of subtly here. Just because you’re a fan of music, for example, is no reason to have a grand piano dominate your living room, or to overwhelm your walls with posters of your favorite bands. In fact, going overboard can make your space more uncomfortable. Instead, why not find a single nice piece that truly reflects your passion, such as a beautiful handmade Dreadnought acoustic guitar?

This can apply to any interest. Into cooking? Spend some money on coordinating the towels and appliances and fixtures in your kitchen. A fan of science fiction? Throw out the action figures and get an imposing and appealing black helmet, like Vader’s, for prominent display. History buff? Maybe a large print of a photograph of a single iconic moment in history.

Whatever the case, the point is that the power to rearrange and reinvigorate your living space is in your hands. The main things to remember are to go low-key, eliminate clutter, get rid of garish colors like white, and incorporate your interests in a tasteful way to make the space truly yours.

All Fall Down [VHS]

All Fall Down is a memorable movie that never quite turns into a really good one. Its roots are in the American theater of the 1950s–in particular, William Inge’s heavy-breathing contemplations of heartland family life–and the overemphatic school of live-TV drama that peaked in Playhouse 90. Director John Frankenheimer made his bones on Playhouse 90 (where producer John Houseman also worked), …
