Bring History Into Your Home With a Four Poster Bed
The poster bed has been dubbed “the bed of kings and the king of beds”. And for good reason. The four post bed has long been thought of as a regal bed, bringing instant old world style and charm to a bedroom. A symbol of wealth, royalty, and charming décor, the poster bed also boasts a long history.
Going back to the 11th Century, beds were often little more than wood planks surrounded by curtains with pillows, quilts and fur rugs for comfort. However they were only for the wealthy. Everyone else – those who were not members of the clergy or royalty – all slept on the floor. The privacy and convenience of being enclosed with draperies was appealing, but the horizontal bars from which they hung were a nuisance, until beds changed drastically in the 1400s.
Four post standing beds were introduced to England by Austria and were enormous, measuring eleven feet square. These beds, to match their size, were ornately detailed and intricately carved. Smaller and less decorative ones were more common, but kings and queens slept on nothing but these over-the-top creations.
As the middle class improved, so did their choices for sleeping. Poster beds became common, and tradesmen often had two or three in their homes. Of course, they were far less elaborate and were actually functional to the home. The four posts were used to support the ceiling, which was often low and heavy.
The Tudors put more emphasis on the pillars, building them thick and tall, up to eighteen inches in diameter. Poster beds underwent another change in the 17th Century: unlike the beds from the Tudor Era, these beds had posts that were thinner and much taller. Made all in one from beechwood, the four post beds of this time were narrower and, with the exception of royalty, became a more reasonable height.
