Watermarking Graphics?
I designed a background to highlight 30 photographs for a charity “poster” auction. The photos were cropped to approx 8 X 10 and the finished product, framed was 16 X 20.
The photographer was asked to provide me with 8 X 10 photos. They provided me with 24 X 36 photos, uncropped. That’s it.
I cropped the photos and placed them onto the graphic background.
The photographer is now asking for digital copies of ALL 30 “posters” for portfolio purposes.
Questions
1. Is this request common & in line with what is normally done? Am I obligated (ethically) to provide this person with copies of all 30?
2. Is it normal for the cropping to be dumped on the graphics person?
3 How do I watermark the design in a manner that indicates that the design is mine and not totally destroy the object (in the event that they really do want them all for portfolio purposes), but to make it impossible to reproduce?
I’d appreciate any other advice anyone has to offer.

1. The photographer is entitled to the photographer’s work only, which he/she should already have. It’s up to you, really. I could see a photographer requesting a single image, but all 30? It would be more reasonable for them to request access to the posters, so they might scan/photograph them themselves, rather than have you do all the work.
2. Sometimes. If they were asked to provide you with 8x10s then they should have given you 8x10s.
3. Photoshop. The answer is always Photoshop. Since they want digital copies anyway, you shouldn’t have to do anything to your originals. The simplest way is to pull up your image, create a new text layer, type “copyrighted, your name, date” or what have you. Lower the text layer’s opacity to 25%, and flatten the image.
