Pop Up Flash Diffuser Nikon

What’s a good Nikon Speedlight for me?
I have a Nikon D60, and I love shooting portraits. I bought a small pop-up diffuser about six months ago, so I could shoot portraits with the built-in flash. However, most of my portraiture shots, if not all, have been taken in ambient lighting, as the camera’s built-in flash is, in my own opinion, horrible for shooting portraits.
I would like to find a good speedlight for portraiture shots. In a year or two, I am going to try and find a D200, or if something a little more recent comes out before that time, I may swing for that instead. But I definitely want to upgrade in the next year or so.
So, what would be a good bet? I’ve pretty much set the SB-400 aside. I would like something that I can continue using with my next DSLR body. Also, I usually shoot fully manual. So a speedlight with full manual control would be great, but ultimately, it’s not a complete necessity.
So, should I go with the SB-600 or the SB-800?
Yes, the SB-900 is a possibility.
Ask yourself a few questions
1) how far away do you want the flash to reach ?
The higher the GN on a flash the more powerful it is and the further it will reach The 900 is the most powerful then the 800 then the 600
2) do you want to use the Nikon creative lighting system ?
The SB900 and SB 800 can server as the commander for the CLS the pop up flash on some Nikon cameras can also do this but not the D60 ( the D200 can be a commander )
you can still do off camera flash work even without the CLS but you have to buy PC cords, optical slaves or radio triggers.
3) how much money do you have to spend ?
more money equals more features the SB900 has 3 lighting patters a greater zoom than the 800 and upgradable firmware. the SB800 is gone from the Nikon USA website so I guess you are down to whats in stock only for that
If you do not want to shoot iTTL or TTL and want full manual control only you can get several manual flashes for what you can get a dedicated speedlight for here is a good all manual speedlight

of course the nikon flashes have a manual mode also ( M1/1 (full output) to M1/128 on the SB900/SB800 and M1/1 (full output) to M1/64 on the SB600)
you may want to go to http://strobist.blogspot.com/ and glance through the lighting 101 section its a good tutorial that may help you decide what you want the speedlight to do before you buy it
personal opinion is that any of the 3 you mention can work for you, I have 2 of the SB800s and love them but I also have 2 of the lumipro and they have worked out well so far also. If you really want to improve your portraits you need to get the speedlight off the camera
here is info on the CLS
