Pop Star Baby Bedding

what is the best filtration to have for a 26 gal saltwater reef tank?
right now i have a gold bar maroon, a yellow headed sleeper goby and a baby snowflake eel.
corals i have are mostly mushroom variations including a few ricordia, and then 3 pretty big pulsing xenia and a little bed of green star polyps.
theres also a ton of snails (mostly nessarius and a few turbo, astrea and a foreign one) and some mexican hermit crabs and tiny blue hermits.
oh yeah, theres also all those tiny feather duster that pop up on their own everywhere. i really like those and know they’re not hurting anything ![]()
as far as water quality, its been pretty stable in the past month or two, with zero nitrites, nitrates and usually around .25 ammonia. also stable salinity, pH, and temp.
now i’m just wondering if a skimmer is absolutely neccessary? with the skimmer tho, i have a fluval right now, so would i need them together or what? or is the fluval ok by itself forever? and what is the best kind of skimmer to get?
or any other filtration suggestions for the best reef tank?
As Craig said this is a subjective topic.
I too will state that if your canister filter is properly maintained, as these filters (regardless of brand) can become nitrate factories it should be fine. How you set the Fluval up with media would make a difference, consider volcanic rock, ceramic bio media, and even live rock crumbles.
A second filter would t hurt either for redundancy and this can be as basic as the lowly underrated sponge filter, or a protein Skimmer of which there are many types from HOB, to sump, to one that is a combination HOB, UV Sterilizer, Protein Skimmer (the Via Aqua Multi Skimmer). That said, I have kept MANY reef tanks successfully over the years without Protein Skimmers (measuring results too) and will state that even though many persons recommend these, they are not essential and can be a hassle to maintain sometimes.
Although also not essential I would more strongly recommend a good UV Sterilizer connected to your Fluval (not a cheap Aqua Medic, Jebo, Ect.) as I have more research showing improved tank health (such as Redox Potential, see this article: http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Redox_Potential.html )
I would make sure and have
Live rock and employ the Berlin Filter method (which involves live rock) as well.
This article will give you more information including pros and cons of different filters and filter methods:
