Best Time to Learn Music for Kids
Many friends always complain “My baby is 2 years old and very talented for music. Which instrument he can learn to play?”, “My daughter is already 4 years old with long fingers, and she is insisting on learning pianos. Should I agree?” and “My 6-year-old son is learning violins. He was very happy to take the classes at the very beginning and now he gets bored.”
Those complaints are common among young parents, for they believe that music is beneficial for children’s intelligence development and musical instruments are good devices to learn music. Some parents may believe that their children are born genius for music and one day they will make success of it through learning them. Anyway, there is a common concern for them: how old to learn to play musical instruments is proper for their kids？
The answers vary from one person to another. Many music experts suggest that the youngest children for learning musical instruments should be no less than 3 years old.
Generally, the younger a child gets close to music, the earlier he or she will appreciate the pleasure and beauty of art, which will exert a subtle and positive influence on children’s all-round development. “Close to music” refers to have children listen to all kinds of cheerful music, such as classical music, rock, pop, jazz, etc. Studies show that children’s aural ability grow rapidly from 2 to 6 years old when music could help intensify children’s sensibility on rhythm and voices. At the same time, children’s affections for the unique voices of musical instruments could be built up.
However, in such age period, the development of children’s finger muscles is still not mature enough for “skilled” trainings. As for musical instruments, it’s better to take such trainings at 4 years old later. Before that, children’s interests in music should be formed by various music entertainments. According to a survey on international piano competitions, 60%-70% contest winners start to play piano at 6 to 8 years old, some at 10 years old around and only a few at 3 years old around. Thus, many famous pianists hold that the best age for piano starters should be around 3 to 6 years old.
All in all, learning musical instruments can be helpful for children’s growth. The proper starting age for learning is of importance; otherwise, it will do harm to children’s imagination and happiness.
