God sent the human race with different shapes, sizes and eye colors. Some with perfectly functioning vision while some others do not. Visual defects, whether caused by genetic anomalies or due to trauma contracted later in life, undoubtedly is associated with major limitations in several aspects in life. However, many individuals do not agree that being blind is a liability. To them, it serves as a challenge to be different and excel and be known in the field that they have chosen.
Alicia Alonso, a Cuban prima ballerina, choreographer and director continued to dance lead roles despite her failing eyesight. At the age of nineteen, she was believed to have suffered from an eye disease that made her partially blind. She was diagnosed with a detached retina and had three unsuccessful eye surgeries which may have been partially contributed by her stubbornness to adhere to treatment and post-operative restrictions. Despite her affliction, she continued to dance requiring her partners to be in the exact location where she expected them to be and utilized various light colors strategically positioned in various points on the stage. With her own consummate style, she left a mark on the international world of dance.
Who would have believed that Italian tenor and Grammy nominee Andrea Boccelli with over 22 pop and classical album recordings to his glory and Billboard’s top ten artist, number one in classical album charts in the US and made riches for selling more than 70 million of albums worldwide was blind? During his childhood, he exhibited signs of blindness and was later diagnosed with an eye disease called glaucoma. However, due a football accident, he got completely blind when he was twelve. Such disability, however, did not stop him from becoming a world renowned performer.
American singer-songwriter, record producer, instrumentalist and the first ever male artist who got 22 Grammy to his name, Stevie Wonder suffered from retinopathy since birth. Born six weeks premature, his visual defect may have been exacerbated by the oxygen being pumped into the incubator where he remained for a period of time. Despite being blind, he became known for his exceedingly beautiful voice and famous worldwide.
Any disability should not pose as a hindrance for us to achieve our goals or lower the quality of our performance. Some individuals who are differently able are given support to strengthen wherever they are deemed weak. In the military for example, where no margin of error is allowed as the slightest error is bound to result to a monumental problem, 100 percent accuracy is always expected. Unlike singers and dancers where a missed note or step goes unnoticed, an error in the military operations can have a domino effect. For such reasons, equipment and gadgets were invented and are being invented to eliminate errors.
Working your best under various limitations such as darkness and being around a hundred passersby can be frustrating.
