Can i play classical guitar with a metal stringed acoustic guitar?

I wanted to take classical guitar lessons and i wanted to know if i could play classical guitar if i just change my strings from metal to nylon.

Yes you can.
There are a few issues though…
It’s not easy to fix nylon strings onto an acoustic bridge as the method of attaching the strings is different – steel strings have a ball end and nylon strings are knotted. There are a few makes of ball-end nylon strings about and that will make things easier for you.

Next, the acoustic neck is narrower and curved (radiused). Not a problem (I play both sorts of neck), but something to be aware of.

Lastly, the acoustic guitar is set to work with strings 2.5 times as tight as classical strings, which means that it’s braced, reinforced and not very responsive (compared to a classical guitar which is delicate, sensitive and responsive).
This will mean that an acoustic guitar with nylon strings on will sound a bit quiet.

But yes, it’s very do-able, and the nylon strings will be much kinder to your fingers!
