What is the name for the cutout window between a kitchen and another room?
Hi, In my living room, there is a cutout place that allows you to see into the kitchen area. It is about as wide as a small picture window with a bottom ledge. It looks like there should be a window there but there isn’t. I know there is a name for it but I don’t know what is called.
Do you know what it is called?
I can sit in my living room and look into the dining room/kitchen through this windowless area.

A Passthrough? Are you sure that is just the window part? Because you can’t walk through it like a door. It is just a window area in the middle of the wall. It is not a doorway.
Yes, it’s a passthrough. It’s meant for passing things like food and drinks from the kitchen to another room. If it was made for people to walk through, it would be a doorway. Passthroughs are most usual between the kitchen and the dining room. It’s possible it really was a window at one time. Did someone add on to the house and maybe just leave the window there to use as a passthrough?
