Women Seen and heard of a strategic vision
Women seen and heard: Speaking with a strategic vision of Lois Phillips, Ph.D.
Taken and adapted from "Women Seen and Heard: Lessons Learned from Successful Speakers" by Lois Phillips, Ph.D. and Anita Perez Ferguson, MA (Light Publications 2004), published WITI.COM Bulletin 2005.
According to Catalyst, the leading research source on the progress of women in leadership roles of management, stereotyping of women remains a problem, especially with regard to the ability of women to discuss and resolve problems as well as men. So if you are a woman or help the advancement of women do this exercise:
Imagine facing a large audience to begin by describing a technological advantage. You know your business and want to bring people together to improve mutual success. But the audience may wonder whether they should take seriously. Even if you are the epitome of cool, that is always against the stereotype of women as illogical oriented, emotional, and details. How do you prepare to deliver their message and therefore have an impact?
Truth is that even when women come to the position and state, women speakers need to gain credibility before they are credible. The voice of authority has always been and remains a male voice, John Wayne, Lee Iacocca, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. Men begin with credibility as leaders, and women should win.
The public must understand that it is no coincidence that is in front of them. You teach you and your company on its way to the podium. In the women's movement Professional role formerly occupied by men only, women should be recognizing the unique position that is even more important than knowing your subject, your overall message the hearing must be:
"I am a capable leader, competent and dynamic speaker. I'll give the gift of my wisdom. In fact, this presentation may change your life! "
persuasive speech is essential to a successful business woman. For example, employers need to obtain banking and private equity means talking to venture capitalists and no. Executives have to motivate teams to work smarter, not harder. Marcos executives are by the change and requires that they become dynamic speakers. Stories should be submitted in this regard, the examples should dramatize the need for change, and information must be presented to the top, facing the future. how about a woman should reflect a strategic standpoint, if you want to be seen, heard, trusted, and remembered as a leader.
It is possible to deliver your message in a more forceful, without giving women more "feminine" sensibilities, commonly considered as empathy, compassion, and a coordinated approach to life. speakers who are successful good advice for you:
1. Dare to be bold.
2. Expand communication skills.
3. Keep an eye on the bigger picture.
4. Present your settings in terms of human consequences.
Daring to be bold
Being assertive is a prerequisite for being a leader: it comes with the territory. Nothing "virtual" to matter. Explain to people what do or how they may think something is a new role for women who have been programmed by the convention to smile and be nice, as men and not exacerbate disagreements especially in public. Be brave and open is difficult if you have little models and were encouraged to be "seen and not heard" by parents, teachers, friends religious teachings, and the media. Think about your early years and is given one point for each true statement below:
Questionnaire Self-assessment:
The people in my family asked my opinion or ask what I thought.
People told me it was worthwhile.
I have seen movies or read books about women in unconventional roles.
friends and coworkers with astonishment to lead our group or team.
People often quote me, repeating a catchy phrase, curiously, or an important story.
Rating:
• Result 1: It is important to find positive dynamic presenters. Observe how they organize their ideas and their presentation style to be effective, and test their techniques. Volunteer to be on a panel, or make a presentation at a staff meeting. Find people who encourage you to develop these skills and give you a pat on the back and useful information.
• A score of 2 or 3: You have the potential to become a dynamic speaker. You can imagine role they need to motivate people to change.
• A score of 4 or 5: You have the experience to effectively use your presentation skills and personal style in advance, you and your organization to a whole new level.
Develop strong communication skills
Public speaking has almost always been structured as a monologue, not dialogue. The eyes and ears of the public attention on the speaker, which is supposed to have a strong personality and points of view. Women tend to be more familiar and less authoritarian in their delivery of the facts and history. They want to relate, are interested in how others feel, and seek common ground. These are admirable qualities in intimate gatherings and useful in presentations, but, being a speaker or leader has a more assertive communication. At the podium, his commitment to his vision must outweigh any tendency for moderation. Women in technology industries to break down barriers, research tells us that women do not reach the level of technology management more easily than they have in more traditional industries. A study University of Pennsylvania found that women account for 9 percent of high-level telecommunications media and Internet companies, unless the average 13 percent for all companies. This statistic is unfortunate because women bring a new perspective for the company could develop a more diversified clientele products waiting to be designed.
If women are discouraged and frustrated reward and allow companies to start their own businesses, which assures greater probability of success. In fact, the number of women-owned businesses increased by 28% in the last seven years, three times the rate of growth among all companies employees, and women now control almost half of all small businesses in America. As the advancement of women in the areas of technology, not only will to be starting businesses, but also offer new opportunities for women seeking higher positions.
Here are seven techniques to help you take care and stay focused.
1. Be direct
If proposed actions, either directly in its proposal in a way that is easy to understand for everyone. For example:
What we need now is. . . . If not, there are three predictable consequences. They are …
2. Logical
Lorsque vous des present arguments, the logique et l'Utilisation of concentrated rester sur votre sujet. For example:
When analyzing the impact of industry practices that create pollution, we must consider the quality of our air and water and toxic substances in soil, especially if we show our partners that may be a good citizen.
3. Be specific
Avoid generalizations. Be specific about your experience and your success. This can be difficult for those of us who want to avoid boasting. For example:
I have ten years in the field working with over 300 corporate clients, and researchers in science Computer and graduate students, and I've learned five lessons that have saved millions from the company. They are …
4. Do not reveal too Much
When you have a moving story, make sure you are not venting, blaming, or play the victim. Use the right amount of self-disclosure, as long as you are satisfied or sink to self-mockery. Be brief and context of the story so make a point. For example, someone could gain credibility as follows:
"I am a cancer survivor. At first I was devastated by the news. Although I would not recommend the option of getting cancer, Ironically, I am a better person and have a richer life accordingly. I'm still a better manager. Today I will share with you three lessons I learned survive a cancer that apply to ensure that our company survive and prosper … "
5. Collect the facts. Use facts
Research and facts relating to the most current and accurate information to support your opinion. You may have many legitimate feelings and great stories to tell about the subject, but without knowing the facts to support them, you may lose your audience. For example:
We need to understand how the California economy has an impact on our results. When I went out of our cocoon in Silicon Valley to visit urban schools and colleges, I was surprised to realize that only 2% of all students have a computer and – most of them not ours.
6. Keep an eye on The Big Picture
Leaders focus on the big picture and not get bogged down in details. Future leaders are brain changes that may be large. What is the main problem in the industry? Took him. For example, Cynthia Dwork, senior researcher at Microsoft addressed the problem of spam because your company has a significant financial contribution to its elimination. She sees it as a heritage puzzle resolved, the expected customer satisfaction and appreciate the creation of more benefit to your business.
To ensure that you are considered a great thinker photos, the presentation should begin with a vision statement and an action plan to remove concrete implementation. The big picture focus with large questions. Ask yourself:
• What is the future ideal scenario I see for this particular challenge or problem?
• Why What is my vision and action plan win-win? What are the advantages and benefits?
• What are the main general strategies that will help us achieve this vision together?
• What should I do so that we can achieve this vision?
Now get specific and build your plan of action:
1. State your point by point and remember not explicitly address a list of your main points in advance for your explanations and examples for everyone.
2. Proceed logically, one step at a time. Rely on each successive idea.
3. For each item, use transition words like "First" Second "and" third party "so it is easy to follow.
4. Prevent the carrying out impulsive tangents speech. You're driving the train so stay on the track. Look straight ahead and take your listeners with you.
7. Present your settings in terms of consequences human
In this post-Enron world, people appreciate knowing that all decisions involve risks, you have thought about the possible consequences. Can you walk to the public implications for groups, teams, departments and individuals? This is where your conversation skills will be useful. Each client has a history. Give these statistics a human face. Present the best and the worst. People can be surprisingly flexible if the leaders are straight with them about the bad news. Budget cuts moving the facility, merger, acquisition, or downsizing are best discussed from the podium that the water cooler. Motivational presentations can align our listeners around a compelling vision of the future than they are willing to accept short term pain for long-term benefits.
If problems or provide solutions for a cure against spam, women are not encouraged to speak in the past, but it's a new world, one that requires the participation in debates and discussions that matter most. Women managers have years of experience and ideas to share. Ask yourself: Do you play a role in shaping the future technology? Doing so will have to develop its public voice.
Consider this: your good ideas can build a business and improve the local economy ultimately change the world. All great ideas have had to overcome deep skepticism, but at least had a higher probability of a public hearing if came to mind a man, a pen, the hand or mouth. Great ideas for women were more widely shared in diaries, letters, or private conversation, but the speakers women today have a range of opportunities to be a force for change. E-mail may be tempting, but managers must face the time each time a choice point occurs. As the speaker with a strategic vision will be seen, heard and remembered.
