John Wayne In Color

Is there non-technical English word that means “a unit of information”?

As hard as I look, I cannot find a good word that means a single, small item of information. Examples of what I am talking about is someone’s phone number, the name of the highest mountain in Brazil, or the color of John Wayne’s eyes. In I.T, we have ‘bit’, ‘byte’, ‘field’, ‘attribute’, ‘variable’ and ‘name/value pair’. However, these are jargon terms, which are not understood by non-I.T. people. Neologisms include ‘meme’, ‘factoid’ and even ‘factlet’ but these have special shades of meaning that make them unsuitable.
‘Trivia’ is not a ‘single unit of information’. It is a opinion about the usefulness of information. ‘fact’ is closer but implies the information is correct. I want a neutral term that might equally apply to incorrect information.
‘datum’ is probably the best answer so far. I guess I was hoping for something that more people understood intuitively. Most dont really understand that ‘data’ is plural.

The word you’re looking for is datum.

Although scarcely seen in its original 3-D, and entirely out of sight for a decade and a half after its producer-star died, Hondo has maintained a high rep among John Wayne fans–and it wasn’t even directed by Howard Hawks or John Ford. (Actually, Ford did shoot some second-unit stuff while visiting Wayne on location.) Half-breed Hondo, companioned only by an antisocial dog, tends to be more sympa…
