Is doubting the credibility of John Wayne as an all American war hero treacherous. …if so explain, please?
I think it’s most certainly justified to doubt. Considering the fact that the majority of Hollywood’s leading actors couldn’t seem to enlist fast enough yet Wayne made no serious effort to do so himself is reason enough to question his credibility.
I remember reading, however, (and this was some time ago so if my details are a little hazy, please forgive) that the studio did everything in it’s power to make sure Wayne didn’t go off to war and, I believe, they threatened to sue him for breech of contract if he did enlist voluntarily. Though I don’t see how that could ever hold up in a court of law.
In short, it wasn’t as if we could say he was a draft-dodger but he certainly didn’t make any effort to enlist.
No treachery in that statement at all.
