MP3 virgin – some advice please…?

… I have never owned or used an MP3 player of any sort, and I now have a phone with one on and would quite like to use it. However, I have no idea how you download the music to the MP3 player. Two things really:

I’d steer clear of the file sharing sites – aside from the illegality they tend to be infected with viruses, the quality’s not good and you probably wont find much classical music anyway. Classiccat has a listing of free mp3s, but I’ve no idea what the quality’s like. Allofmp3 has a good range, is very cheap and you can select the quality you want. There is a question mark over its legality, though I’ve seen as many “authoritative” sites say it’s legal as illegal. iTunes is the best known download site, but there’s a huge number out there – try searching for “mp3″ and “classical music”.

To get your CDs on to an mp3 player you’ll need to start by “ripping” them to your computer. CDex is a popular free ripper, though you might want something that can help you catalogue your collection as you’re ripping it. MediaMonkey might be a better choice. If you’ve got a serious music collection you should have a look at JRiver’s Media Centre. It’s not free, but it will allow you to store a lot more information about your collection. Of course it’s quite possible that all the software you need was supplied with your phone!
