Are you bored with your choices of songs to play on the guitar? Are you tired of playing the same songs over and over? This can happen quite often. When you get to this point, it is hard to stay motivated. There are a few things you can do to find new material to learn.

Check out your own favorite guitar players. See who influenced them and start listening to some of that music. Besides coming up with new material, you may start opening up your playing to a different style of music and playing. You can never learn too much when it comes to guitar playing.

You can learn an album cut from your favorite artist that you really love. These are the songs that you can make your own. Not many people have heard the original, so it’s all yours. In fact, I have played songs that weren’t popular, but they were my favorites and others have gone out and bought the album of the original artist because they just loved the song so much. That is always cool when you can turn others on to your favorites.

When you learn songs that you like, it always makes it easier to learn, but sometimes, you just have to learn songs that other people like. If you play in a band, you need to find songs that get the crowd up and dancing. This will determine your success and get your band booked again. Never, never close your mind to learning a song, even if you don’t like it. The more songs you know, the better you will be prepared when someone requests you to play a song. Just like with anything else, you want to build a reputation of being a great guitar player.

Sometimes, when I get too bored, I will tune my guitar in an alternate tuning and then try playing my favorite songs. Open tunings can sometimes be a little easier to play because you can’t really hit any strings that sound bad. You just need to learn how to chords are fingered and the scales to those tunings. It can be a whole lot of fun to explore open or alternate tunings on the guitar. This can sometimes get you out of a slump.

There is just so much music out there, that the possibilities are endless. With that said, it can also be hard searching through everything to find songs that you are actually able to play and sound good. Another thing I do when I get bored is to go to a guitar tablature site that has thousands of songs on it. It is usually set up by the artists’ names in alphabetical order. I will start at the beginning and just go through every artist that I am familiar with. The songs are listed and if I heard any of the songs, I will click on and try to figure it out. I just go down the line and I am always amazed by how many of the songs I can actually play. These are just a few things I do when I am bored and want to figure out some new songs to play on the guitar.
