‘Beginners’ classic great western literature?

I’ve recently decided due to my passionate love for Roman history (I’ve studied classical civilisation AS level looking to study A2 and I’ve Rome series 1 and 2 on DVD) that I’d like to start reading classical texts such as plays and such because books can be a great way to relax and disengage from the world around me. However I found my mum’s old copy of Plato: the republic was a bit too much for me which I think is because I’m not a very frequent reader. Are there any similar texts that people would recommend that also have interesting plot lines and relate-able characters alongside political/philosophical ideas?

I’d strongly recommend Robert Graves’ novel I, Claudius. It is historical fiction but incredibly well researched. It follows the life of future Roman Emperor through his days as a boy during the time of Augustus Caesar through the reigns of Tiberius and Caligula. It’s a great insight into the political intrigue of the time as well as the daily mechanics of Roman life.
