How do I hook up this 5.1 surround sound system… am I doing it wrong?
I have a Yamaha RX-V361 AV receiver and a set of the Energy Take Classic 5.1 speakers. I have an xbox, ps3, wii, all hooked up so the audio goes through the different audio channels on the receiver and the video goes through my different video inputs on my TV. my problem is that when i put in a movie (DVD or Blu-Ray) that is 5.1 surround supported, i only get sound out of the fronts and center. all the speakers are hooked up correctly… however, i think that there is some setting that i am overlooking in the manual and cannot get it. I am really frustrated because i have never had this problem before. sound does come out of the rears, but only when you set the receiver to “5ch stereo”… but all that is doing is copying the front frequencies to the rears… its not surround. just thought i would see what others’ input would be… thanks
Is your receiver also the amplifier? If not, you are running your receiver to an amp that has the speakers on it. If this is the case, you will have to have a specific cable, either optical or digital audio, to get true surround sound.
If your receiver is also your amp….
Are you playing these movies through your PS3, wii, or xbox?
If so…
You may need to change the settings on these devices to run surround sound. Also check the outputs to be sure they are capable of doing surround sound. A standard RCA cable is not capable of this, which is your red, white, and yellow cable.
Be sure the settings are correct on player.
If these are correct…
And your cables are correct…
And you have your cables plugged in correct…
Then you should have either a button or input on your receiver that allows you to switch to Dolby or Digital, surround sound. Sometimes it’s called ProLogic, or something from the manufacturer.
Be sure the “input” switch is in the right place on the receiver. On some receivers, once you set the input, you also must set the output settings. Example… Input optical/digital, output surround/dolby.
If you still have trouble, contact the receiver manufacturer.
Hope this helps.
