Classic Rock Collection Cd

how do i turn a great deal of cds into easily accessible mp3s?
my family home houses an extensive cd collection of just about any classic rock and roll album you’d ever want to listen to. I’d estimate there’s close to 1000 cds of just the important stuff. What i want to do is be able to have an external hard drive of just these albums, completely organized and compatible with several computers/ipods so users can plug in, collect the music they want and be done with it. I don’t want to have to crowd our respective laptops with music files. This all seems like a ton of work, is it even possible to do? Am i going to have to pay someone to take care of all this for my family and i?
Its quite possible, in fact I have about this much music and do just that, (I also use it for video backup). The hard part is making them into MP3′s you will need to choose a good bit-rate that will economically fit onto the hard disk you choose. I personally have my media spanning over 3 external disks totally just under 1.4 TB (1,400 gigabytes) I suggest you go with the Western Digital MyBook they are reasonably priced and they shut off when they are left Idle which is a HUGE plus because heat and wear and tear destroy hard drives and I am pretty sure after you spend the 10 or 12 hours doing this that you would be fairly unhappy if the drive all of a sudden failed. I suggest taking your time and only do a few albums at a time and get an ID3 tag program because typeing in this information would be insane.
