Is there any classic novel in audio?
What classic novel should I download?
In any case, I would like to use a freebie download of an audio book on something like a Dickens, or Twain, or some other person who has written a “classic” that I skipped reading back in high school.
What would you recommend?
Well, it really depends on your taste. Pride and Prejudice (mentioned by the answer above) is a great book, but is not always popular with boys, and although To Kill A Mockingbird is a great book too, I would not exactly describe it as ‘sweet, light, and romantic’ given that it is about a black man who is put on trial accused (falsely) of raping a white woman in the 1920s in the Deep South. You might prefer it to Pride and Prejudice though.
Mark Twain might be a good choice. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are both great books, Tom Sawyer is lighter than Huck Finn and it might be good to listen to that first, or you might want to plunge straight into Huckleberry Finn, which is an exciting story with much humour and great characters. Another great book by Mark Twain is Life on the Mississippi which is about his experiences of river life and is very entertaining, and another good one is Roughing It, about his adventures in the Wild West in the days when it really was wild.
Dickens can be a bit heavy going, his books are very, very long. But I would recommend perhaps Great Expectations, which is shorter than most of the others and has good characters and an intriguing plot. Or A Tale of Two Cities which is set during the French REvolution and is quite exciting.
Alexander Dumas is another author you might enjoy. The Three Musketeers is a good historical adventure story,and so is The Count of Monte Cristo, and The Black Tulip.
Jules Verne is another classic author whose books you might enjoy. Around the World In Eighty Days is great fun, or you might like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, or Journey to the Centre of the Earth.
The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane is an American classic of the Civil War which might appeal to you.
A minor classic of the 1800s that is one of my very favourite books is Three Men In A Boat by Jerome K. Jerome. It is about three men going on a boating holiday on the Thames and it is one of the funniest books ever written, in my opinion.
Another of my very favourite books which is also a minor classic is My Family And Other Animals by Gerald Durrell, which is about his childhood on Corfu in the 1930s with his wildly eccentric family and is extremely funny.
