Halloween costumes: your opinion on family costumes, letting tots pick their own costume, and scary costumes?
My husband and I are both Halloween enthusiasts.
We love cheesy horror films, carving pumpkins, and dressing in classic costumes (mummy, vampire, frankenstein, freddy krueger, etc..)
I was just wondering if there were any other Halloween-loving parents out there, and if so,
How do you feel about families dressing up in a matching costume-theme?
At what age do you feel its appropriate for a child to pick their own costume?
[and when they pick their own costume, do you give them a few different options to choose from or just ask them "what do you want to be?" without any options or suggestions?]
And also, how do you feel about cutesy vs ‘scary’ costumes for families and for children?
[for example, for a little girl, cutesy princess/fairy/ballerina vs scary witch/black cat/dead bride]
It’s Halloween – what does that have to do with little girls prancing about in their Disney princess outfits? I expect them to at least make an effort to dress up according to the occasion. I would never let my kids pick a generic dress-up outfit and expect to be given treats for wearing it. Halloween isn’t about being cutesy.
Sometimes my kids have had matching themes, but more often they haven’t. I expect them to decide what to be and to provide the ideas on how they might do it, though I’ll help them achieve it if necessary.
You don’t have to be “scary”, though. I remember my then toddler daughter being quite hysterical the first time she saw someone in one of those realistic masks, so I insist they use facepaint or a home made mask so they don’t scare any littlies who may be at home helping to hand out chocolate.
