I remember when I first saw a trailer for quot;Pan’s Labyrinthquot;. I dismissed it as another fantasy movie that I would eventually see on DVD. But the film is much more than simple fantasy. Actually it’s nearly impossible to put the film into any particular genre. quot;Pan’s Labyrinthquot; employs elements of fantasy, horror, drama, action, and adventure. It could just as easily be categorized as a war movie or a thriller. Yes, the movie is that diverse.
Director Guillermo del Toro’s brilliant imagination and vision is brought to life with some masterful camera work and Oscar winning cinematography. From the bright, detailed look of young Ofelia’s fantasyland to the dark, dank, moody forest scenes. The movie completely immerses you. Guillermo del Toro was approached to do quot; The Chronicles of Narniaquot; but turned it down to do quot;Pan’s Labyrinthquot;. After seeing his flawless work, it’s hard to argue with his decision.
Another of the film’s strong points is the superd acting. Ivana Baquero is wonderful as young Ofelia and Sergi Lopez gives an amazing performance as the brutal, fascist Captain. Lopez gives us one the most evil, despicable villians ever seen on film.
quot;Pan’s Labyrinthquot; was a great surprise. At times it brings you into an amazing fantasy world and then it immediately transports you to a realistically brutal, war torn land. quot;Pan’s Labyrinthquot; isn’t for everyone. It’s not a children’s tale. It has some weighty, emotional subject matter and some graphic violence. The film is also is in subtitles and this may turn away some potential viewers. But it shouldn’t. quot;Pan’s Labyrinthquot; is a masterpiece, brilliant in every way. This is a must see!
My mom made me see this movie and i am SOOOO happy that she did. The movie is about a young girl going to see/live with her step dad during the Spanish war. She is also is with her pregnant mom the movie is extremely sad… i don’t want to ruin the movie so i wont say any more. all i CAN say is see it if u haven’t already!
So when I first heard the name Pan’s Labyrinth I had pretty much made up my mind not to see it. A foreign film was just not interesting to me at the particular time. However; I was coerced into seeing it by a couple friends who could not shut up about it. Well now I understand why. Along with the astounding visual effects and the wonderful dialogue, the movie actually had a really good message along with it. Not the kind of underlying brainless theme that currently most movies have migrated toward.
The movie is based during the Spanish civil war. A young girl and her pregnant mother travel to a military base, because the mother is bearing the commanding officer’s baby. As the story progresses two battles emerge, the actual battle between the Spanish and the rebels and the battle of the girl to escape the harsh reality of her new life. The fates of the two battles become twisted as one and the girl’s lines between what is real and what is imagination become too jaded to tell apart.
If you are a true movie fan I strongly urge you to see this movie. If you don’t see it due to the use of subtitles, then I suggest you go back and watch such classics as White Chicks and Bloodrayne.
Pan’s Labyrinth is a spanish speaking movie based during the Franco Dictatorship which was basically a depressing time of suppression under the catholic church and government. It’s based after the spanish civil war when the Franco Government were hunting and killing the rebels, so if you plan to see it, you won’t get lost in the story line.
My favorite thing about this movie is how you can’t tell wether the fantasy scenes were really happening or just from her mind.
This movie, from the same guy that did Hellboy, is centered on a little girl and her fantasy land she uses to escape her reality, which is living through war in a home where her new “dad” is an evil captain that doesn’t like her.
IF you plan to see this movie, don’t take younger children because it “it aint all rainbows and sunshine.” There are beautiful fantasy lands and characters with some fantasy story lines, but that kinda gets balanced out with the realistic scenes of brutality and gore. But other than that, this movie is fantastic and i recommened anyone who doesn’t mind reading subtitles to go see it immediatley.
“THIS IS DEFINETLY THE BEST MOVIE EVER!” Even though it was spanish, I followed it really well. It was imagitive, beauitful, and wonderful. Athought very gory and violent it still a prefect movie. I do not recommend it for kids. This movie is completely the oppisite of Borat. Number one movie of 2006 for sure! Great writing, excellent preformances, and an excellent cinematic experience. It begins during the war, as a group of soilders meet up at an old water mill, to set up command points, to destroy a band of rebels. Ofiela, a young girls, is in love with fairy tales. She follows a fairy into a Labyrinth, to meet a Faun, in which she befriends. He tells her she is Princess Moanna, and must complete three tasks to prove she is not lost to the humans. The first task, she must kill a giant toad living under an oak tree, to recieve a key. (this scene was very disturbing) then, the second, she uses the key to go to a dinning room, and take out a dagger, but eats the food on the table, even though told not to, and awaikins a weird creature, that has eyes in it’s hand, and it chases after her, theatrening in death. The faun leaves as she did not follow the rules, and she is left alone. Her mother dies, during pregancy, and her father very abusive only cares about the baby (his son). Finaly the Faun revisits her, and tells her she may join him, at his royal palace, only if she follows his rules.
The movie disveres oscars, and was really excellent. The imagination behind this movie, was awesome, and definetly should create more movies. The special effects in this movie, was purely amazing. The spanish title of the movie is “El Laberinto del Fauno” a.k.a Pan’s Labyrinth.
