U.S. Economy Unemployment Corporations DJIA Stock Market Business?
Virtually every sector in the U.S. Economy from Housing to Retail to Banking to Small Businesses are laying off workers in 2009. For example, video game company Electronics Arts has plans to lay off 10% of its work force in the upcoming season. How does this affect the unemployment rate in the U.S.? Currently the jobless rate is the highest in 16 years (approximately 8 to 9%). With futher job cuts down the line, will the U.S. economy be pushed into further recession? If this is the case, won’t predictions for a two year recession be inaccurate, and we will be seeing negative growth for much longer?
The workforce reductions trail the economy. Microsoft announced a 5,000 employee reduction last week. When the beneficiaries of the information technology boom adjust their costs to reflect real world economic conditions, the underlying economy will begin to return to growth. Only the local, state, and federal governments add employees in the midst of a recessionary downturn. Two years of flat to negative growth seems reasonable. When an honest decision is made on the Detroit automakers and the UAW, there will be some color shed on the length of the recession. Candidly, I was surprised that the general pubic opposed another Detroit bailout and the media reported the public displeasure with the auto bailout. This one industry needs to rationalized before an exit from recession can begin.

Come Away With Me $5.24 It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones’s voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic “Cold … |

Songs About Jane $6.82 Maroon 5 aren’t the first band to fuse R&B and rock, but they certainly are one of the most convincing. One can almost hear Stevie Wonder’s beaded braids clattering in time to their deep, funky grooves. At best, the band conjures up latter-day Motown, complete with a shuddering organ and hyperbolic vocals; at worst, they sound like a stylized boy band, with all the attendant close harmonies and dr… |

The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album $5.15 At the time of its release, this was the watershed for soundtracks, selling a kazillion copies. It documents Whitney Houston’s character in the Kevin Costner movie, which required Houston to play only herself (although one hopes she wouldn’t end up with someone as smarmy as Costner). The album is as much a testament to the production of Babyface who, through the mid-1990s, actually was the mainstr… |

My Best Friend’s Wedding [VHS] $0.01 One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, My Best Friend’s Wedding not only gave Julia Roberts a delightful vehicle for her crowd-pleasing comeback, but it further distinguished itself by avoiding the conventional plotting of the genre. Julia plays a prominent Chicago restaurant critic whose best friend (Dermot Mulroney) is a former lover from her college days with whom she’d made a binding … |

Star Trek – The Motion Picture [VHS] $0.99 Back when the first Star Trek feature was released in December 1979, the Trek franchise was still relatively modest, consisting of the original TV series, an animated cartoon series from 1973-74, and a burgeoning fan network around the world. Series creator Gene Roddenberry had conceived a second TV series, but after the success of Star Wars the project was upgraded into this lavish feature film,… |

Three Stooges: Cookoo Cavaliers also includes Booby Dupes and Busy Buddies [VHS] $4.89 “Cookoo Cavaliers” (1940) and “Booby Dupes” (1943) are respectively the 51st and 84th entries in the Columbia series of Three Stooges shorts. While most of the shorts on these releases are in no particular order, both of these episodes start with the boys in the fish business. In the first, their 30-day-old catches and lack of customers force them to purchase what they think is a saloon down in Cu… |
