Am I allowed to do this?

I wanted to make hand painted picture frames, foot stools, name plates etc for kids and sell them. I WAS planning on doing whatever designs people wanted including stuff like Yo Gabba Gabba, Backyardigans (you get the picture) but then I thought about it a little more and am wondering if I can even do that? I can find all kinds of FREE clip art of these characters though, so then I thought well maybe I can. What is the correct answer here. Can I or can’t I?

As long as you do not copy the actual characters from a licensed item, you are all right. Yes, clip art available free is a legal source of pictures. Also, you can use the Internet to learn HOW to draw many of the more popular characters. If you get close, little guys are going to be very please, they are not looking for perfection. As long as the colors are right, and the shapes are basically close, they will pass with the pre-school / elementary school set.

I think these would sell very well near the holidays, but I wouldn’t count on making a killing. Hand made items are considered a luxury, and right now crafters are feeling a worse pinch than the general population.

So go ahead, work on your dreams.
