Does anyone know the laws on the art of cheating? ?

I'm an artist. I draw, mostly, but not other forms of art. In general, I asked him to do portraits for people of their children or their families from images. I recently had a request to draw a picture of a famous painting. He asked me to change some things, add details, make things a little and change a color here and there. He is paid very well for me. Does anyone know the laws (the U.S.) on the art of copying, such as a picture of a picture in a magazine or calendar. If I can make a copy of the old (very old) of paint do I sign? Is that bad? Should I stop blank? Do I have to say it is not a copy? I do not want problems.
