5 Best Ways to Enjoy Old Time Radio
As a member of the Gen X generation, I have developed a love affair with old time radio which began as early my teenage years. While others were engrossed with the wonders of colored television, my imagination soared with the thrilling adventures of ‘Superman’ and the spine-chilling narrations of ‘Quiet Please.’
Growing up, I was constantly exposed to the classic hits of the golden age of radio and listening to old radio shows has become my favored means of entertainment.
The enjoyment of this old media form should not be limited to a personal one. When you take time to think about it, the benefits of listening to old time radio programs have several functional uses in the world today. Aside from merely being a form of entertainment, it is steadily being recognized in other sectors of society. It is gaining popularity as a tool in the academic field as well as in the field of medicine.
In fact, several syndicated old radio shows have become a platform in teaching history. The plot for many serials in the 1940′s revolved around the world wars and the subject has actually become fun with this innovative learning method.
Listening to episodes of their favorite old time radio anthologies has also helped aging retirees adapt to their lives in a Retirement Home. The familiarity of these old programs provides them with a certain enjoyment and comfort that no other form of entertainment can give.
Another practical utilization for this is in the medical field. Old radio shows help alleviate the boredom that comes with being confined in the hospital for long periods of time. Having a happy disposition facilitates a speedier healing process.
It is also a perfect way to pass the time for long-haul traveling, whether it is by land, sea, or air! Your regular bus or train ride becomes an exciting journey when you’re tuned in to the exploits of ‘The Green Hornet’ or solving mysteries with the dashing and eccentric super sleuth, ‘Sherlock Holmes.’
As for me, curling up in my comfy sofa with a cup of coffee in hand and listening to ‘Little Orphan Annie’ on my iPod is the best way to cap a stressful and tiring day.
