Three NECESSITIES to Help Children Survive a Road Trip
Traveling by car with children can be a lot of fun or a lot of frustration. Proper planning can make all the difference. Here are “THREE MUST HAVES” to make your travel time a success and a learning experience for your children.
Necessity # 1: Pull out the COLORING BOOKS and a NEW box of crayons! Young children need visuals when they travel. As you drive, have your kids color the illustrations in their new coloring books. The act of coloring is soothing and relaxing to children. It calms their nerves, excitement, and energy levels; thus, preparing them for the long road ahead. This first necessity helps them to adjust the time and distance. It’s also great to squash the “how much longer” questions.
Necessity # 2: When the coloring is completed, stick in the new DVD for Kids. A DVD player can be an easy way to entertain the kids while you are driving. Finding great children’s stories can make the trip a better memory. If you have a DVD player in your car, don’t rely on it just for entertainment. Use it as a learning tool as well. Make sure that you bring along a DVD with a theme that is the same or very similar to the coloring books your children just finished. For example, if the coloring books have pictures of animals, put in a DVD about the same or similar animals. Starting something “NEW” is like starting the trip again.
One of our road trip favorites is the Five Friends of Rainbow Forest Children’s Book Series. The coloring books (5 coloring/story/activity books) feature five forest friends, and the DVD tells a story about each “friend.” If one of your children colors the pictures in the Little Ricky Rabbit book, then he/she can see Little Ricky Rabbit’s story on the DVD. If another child chooses Timmy the Turtle, he/she can color the pictures in the book and see Timmy’s story on DVD. All of the books and stories are related, and they provide hours of learning fun. This is a great way to invest in your children’s learning, and they can have fun in the process.
Necessity # 3: No road trip is complete without music for children. Bring along a CD for Kids that plays songs about the characters in the Coloring Book(s) and on the DVD. What a GREAT idea! The CD ensures that your children’s minds are NOT venturing into numerous “unknowns.” EVERYTHING IS RELATED. Your children can pick and choose the songs they would like to hear based on the character in the coloring book and on the DVD. This gives them some freedom, and it gives you a break. Let them know beforehand that these “NECESSITIES” will last through the entire trip so they don’t want to do everything all at once. It’s also fun to have the Five Friends of Rainbow Forest Coloring Posters stashed away so that you can pull them out if the kids become restless.

Five Children’s Educational Books
A Children’s Book Series Every Child MUST HAVE!
“Oh, it’s time to read.” Does your child cringe when it’s his time to read? Does he find excuses not to read? Reading periods vary from school to school, but here are some general principles that apply across the board.
Reading assessments are done before your child begins school. The teacher will do some testing to see where your child is as far as his reading level and reading style are concerned. As you watch this take place, you might feel like you are being put under the microscope. ”You didn’t teach your child sight words?” “He doesn’t know what the J sound makes?” Try not to take personally the responses that your child gives during any assessment. Everyone learns at a different rate.
Reading Assessments will review sight words, vocabulary, comprehension, and other skills as applicable to the teacher. Remind yourself that this is just a help for the teacher and a way to gauge how well your child reads and comprehends. During parent teacher conferences, the teacher will refer to the assessment to see where your child has progressed.
Parents should prepare their children for reading assessments. Your child will have to read and comprehend probably on a daily basis. You will have to help with these skills. Think of it as after school learning, and you are the teacher. This is also a good time to start collecting good reading books and activity books because you can be sure that you will have to start helping your child early on in his/her school career.
As parents, you want books that cover a wide variety of skills. You don’t want to buy book after book that focus on just one (or two at the most) individual skills. You want great books that address as many skills as possible in a related way.
